28th November 2017

I love Christmas time and all the traditions that surround it. This year, for the first time, we decorated gingerbread houses.

It was such a fun activity to do with my girls. We had a selection of delicious things to use on the house (I think they enjoyed nipping the decorations as much as they enjoyed sticking them on the house!).

For decorations we used:

  • pistachio nuts
  • cranberries
  • a selection of sprinkles; stars, silver balls, gold dust
  • marshmallows
  • hand made chocolate

Some other ideas are: smarties, candy canes, chocolate buttons, jelly tots.

These beautiful gingerbread houses are from Moemas. The intricate icing adds a touch of magic to the gingerbread house, and more importantly, the gingerbread tastes (and smells!) divine.

In collaboration with Moemas and Fleur Norton we are giving away THREE gingerbread houses to our Johannesburg readers. To enter, follow Moemas on Instagram and Facebook, and leave a comment here telling us your favourite ingredient to use to decorate a gingerbread house.

Competition closes: Friday 8 Dec, Ts & Cs apply.

Most definitely would have to be smarties! Small enough to stick, bright colours and delicious. What’s not to love?!

Hundreds and Thousands, because they get all over the place, and that’s half the fun 🙂

Definitely desicated coconut to give the royal icing a snowy “look” and pretzel bites dipped in whites chocolate to create the roof.

Followed and Liked… I would decorate these gorgeous houses with some healthy nuts and dark choccie, BUT because it is Christmas some indulgence is allowed and I would add a few fun metallic sprinkle balls 🙂

I love simple white-decorated gingerbread houses, so I would use some marshmallow fluff for a snowy effect!

I had a whole box of US cake decorations including little sugar Holly pieces but the movers wouldn’t allow us to pack them so I had to give them all to a neigbour . Most sad . Melted hard candy makes nice stained class windows .

These comments have given me some amazing ideas for decorating a gingerbread house! I’d definitely have to go with mini marshmallows and some mini candy canes, plus some gold (edible) glitter for the sparkle ✨🌟
