MY TOP 10 ESSENTIALS FOR DECEMBER HOLIDAY (SPONSORED)

13th December 2017
IMG_1324

The December holidays are upon us! And that means packing bags for the whole family. While I am by no means a minimalist packer (that went out the window with the arrival of my twins), I try to keep anything beyond clothing to a minimum. However, no matter the destination, these are 10 items you’ll find in my suitcase at this time of year:

IMG_1326

  1. Dermikelp Moisturising Lotion: What I love about this product is that it’s a cure all for the whole family. I don’t need to pack a hundred different creams for different situations – this will work as a moisturiser, a soothing lotion on any skin irritation, a cooling lotion after a day on the beach, and even treat those pesky itchy bites. Dermikelp products are completely natural so I’m comfortable using it on my girls’ skin. They’re made from kelp extract, and are free from all the nasties (cortisone, parabens, and chemicals). Available from Dischem, and selected Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks and independent pharmacies.
  2. A giant sun hat: I am vigilant about sun protection for me and my babes, and am usually covered up at the beach (hence I arrive back from holiday as pale as ever!).
  3. Mangos: My absolute favourite fruit, and one that is synonymous with December holidays for me. I make sure a box finds its way into the cooler bag of food, and I stock up from padstals once my stash has been devoured.
  4. Artisan chocolate: To maintain balance (or just to feed my addiction) I don’t go anywhere without some good chocolate.
  5. Headphones: Travelling (and nap time!) is the perfect chance to catch up on all those podcasts I’ve been wanting to listen to. I am currently listening to Undisclosed, and Dirty John is next up on my playlist.
  6. Glass water bottle: I actually don’t leave my house without my water bottle. I am trying to reduce my use of plastic in any way I can, and this is such an easy way to do so. Also, it reminds to stay hydrated through the day.
  7. Books: One of my best things about being on holiday is all the reading I get to do as I am not distracted by every day life, chores, and to-do lists. You’ll find the whole family with noses buried into books when we’re on holiday. I am currently reading the obligatory The President’s Keepers with my jaw dropping open.
  8. Camera: I seldom go anywhere without my camera, and holiday is no exception!
  9. Bling: I don’t take my usual jewellery with me on holiday as I don’t want to be worrying about losing it on the beach. But I like to take one or two fun pieces to add to an outfit.
  10. Planner and a pen: A new year means a new diary, and I love that feeling of a whole year’s worth of blank pages. It is such a January ritual to fill in my new yearly planner,

GIVEAWAY: A DERMIKELP HAMPER FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

4th December 2017
IMG_0773

When it comes to skincare I try to only use natural products, especially on my babes’ skin. I find out all I can through trusted sources, word of mouth or just plain old research before I buy a new product whether it’s shampoo for me, body wash for my husband or balm for my girls.

IMG_0771

Although it’s been on the market for a while, I have only recently discovered Dermikelp, and learnt that it is 100% natural. As its name suggests, Dermiklep is made from a type of kelp species that has anti inflammatory properties which target and relieve itchy or irritated skin. It is free from chemicals, parabens and cortisone – the usual culprits found in lotions targeting skin irritations (which is a huge plus for me).

IMG_0770

Dermikelp has a wide range of skincare products such as body wash, shampoo and conditioner, scalp spray, moisturiser lotion, itch relief cream, after sun cream spray, and skin cream and spray. I like that the products are for all ages, so we can all use them, and that there are specific products for specific needs that my individual family members may have. For example, I use the moisturising lotion when one of my girls gets dry patches in the winter months, and I use the itch relief cream to relieve an itchy mozzi bite in the summer. There is also an after sun lotion will I will pop in my bag when we head to the coast.

We have teamed up with Dermikelp to bring you a hamper full of our favourite Dermikelp products, valued at R1300. To enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling us which Dermikelp product you’d like to try. The giveaway closes Friday, 15 December, Ts & Cs apply.

For more information about Dermikelp products visit their website or Facebook page.

WELL DONE WENDY, JULIE AND SARAH

I love Christmas time and all the traditions that surround it. This year, for the first time, we decorated gingerbread houses.

IMG_0414

It was such a fun activity to do with my girls. We had a selection of delicious things to use on the house (I think they enjoyed nipping the decorations as much as they enjoyed sticking them on the house!).

For decorations we used:

  • pistachio nuts
  • cranberries
  • a selection of sprinkles; stars, silver balls, gold dust
  • marshmallows
  • hand made chocolate

Some other ideas are: smarties, candy canes, chocolate buttons, jelly tots.

GIVEAWAY: #WINWITHART

1st November 2017

If you don’t know that we love doing art with our babes then you definitely haven’t been following us for very long. Afternoons spent in our art room are some of our happiest, and our babes love getting creative (and dirty) with paint, pastels, and all sorts of craft materials.

So really, it is no surprise that we are huge fans of mama-run businesses that love kids and all things creative. Two of our favourite companies are: Firstly, Bumble Box – a coffee table art book of all your child’s art. That’s right, mama and former teacher Paula turns kids’ art into the most treasured book. Secondly, Minimi Artelier – whose PLAY2LEARN line includes garments designed to protect children’s clothes while doing arts and crafts, cooking, baking and more, at school and at home.

The other day, we invited Kiss Kiss Photography to our home, threw on our kids’ Minimi Artelier Play2Learn overalls, and let them paint to their hearts desire. Here is the result:

CLOSED: GIVEAWAY: A CUSTOMISED ARTWORK OF YOUR LITTLE ONE BY THE LITTLE ROSE COLLECTION

19th September 2017
pics

CONGRATULATIONS CARLA!

My oldest friend, Kim Rose, is an incredibly talented artist. She has just launched a new line of work creating on customised paintings of children. She sent me a painting of my twin girls and I was completely amazed at how well she captured my girls. It is a very treasured artwork in our home and I am sure my girls will feel like that many years down the line.

We interviewed Kim to find out a bit more about the Little Rose Collection.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I live in Newlands, Cape Town with my husband, son, and two dogs. I’m a stay-at-home mom to my 3 year old son, William, and I work part-time as an artist/illustrator. I LOVE my job and the variety of work that I do. I’m a real homebody and love walking on the mountain and  in Kirstenbosch. If I’m not doing the above, I’m probably drinking tea with my nose in a book.

Tell us about the Little Rose Collection

The Little Rose Collection offers custom-made character artworks for nurseries and children’s rooms. The paintings are nostalgic and aim to capture the simple joys and moments of a childhood filled with wonder.

It came about quite unexpectedly this year when a friend asked me to create four artworks for her daughter’s nursery. She’d been inspired by art she’d had in her room as a child, vintage french illustrations, childhood memories, beautiful clothing and she had a few reference artworks for me. We worked together in creating four seasonal artworks – she gave me input on clothes and the activities she wanted the character to wear and do. LRC grew from there.

This is a new focus for you as an artist. What inspired you to create this collection?

I loved the process of working with a client to create something uniquely special for their family. My other art requires quite an isolated and insular process (which suits me) but it was great doing something different, more playful and colourful. These days capturing memories or moments of childhood is so easily done with a phone camera. Instead of losing those pictures to a file on your computer I  loved the idea of taking a collection of photos and special moments/toys/outfits to combine them into one or a few paintings. It’s something that you can treasure for a long time – your own child or children as characters of their own life story. I am very much inspired by children’s book illustrators –  like how Christopher Robin’s imagination and toys were captured forever in the beautiful original illustrations from Winnie-the-pooh.

What is a key difference between these artworks and your beautiful botanicals that you are known for?

My process is quite similar. The one difference I can think of is that I create two drawings (a sketch and final drawing) in making a LRC artwork and I always send the sketch to the client for approval before I begin painting (like in any illustration process). Whereas in creating the botanicals my sketch and final artwork are the same thing.

What are the different artwork offerings available?

I currently offer originals only. I mainly create custom-made artworks which can be theme-based, although I do have a few originals for sale on my website that are not commissioned. I would like to offer prints of a set of characters in future (I’m working on it!).

Your customised offering is really special. If some one would like to order one, how does it work?

They would need to contact me via  email, Instagram or Facebook. We’d discuss size, content, colour and any other inspiration for the artwork . I would ask for reference pictures and information on the ‘character’ to be created. The more information given to me, the better. For example if the child has a favourite toy, outfit or activity, or if there is an activity/item/season that is special to your family.

Are there different options to choose from?

Artwork sizes are standard 13 x 13cm however I do make larger sizes if requested.

Do you have tips for choosing the photograph to be painted?

There are two ways to go about it. I can work directly from a photo (if it is a good one – I’d need to approve it). Otherwise I can take bits from a collection of photos and piece them together (this is quite fun actually). If I do work directly from a photo, ideally it should be taken at eye level with the child – not from above –  and in natural light. I also like to include the whole body.

Typically how long does it take?

The whole process usually takes about a week (from contact to sending it off). It does depend on how busy I am. I only work from 8 30 to 12am during the school calendar week, and occasionally on weekends. I can be working on a few pictures at a time though. If the client is quick to send pictures and give feedback on the sketches it definitely helps.

What is the cost of a customised artwork?

For this year 2017 my prices are set as follows: Unframed custom original (13 x 13cm) R750. Framed custom original (SA only – 24,5 x 24,5cm frame size) R1100

CONGRATULATIONS SHEREEN LURIE

Mom’s come up with the best ideas about what other moms need and this idea is no exception. A former teacher, and now mother, Paula has just launched Bumble Box, a coffee table art book of all your kid’s art. We chatted to her about what inspired Bumble Box, and how exactly it works.

15350529_10154663507145505_2088214269376446787_n

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Paula, I live in Johannesburg and last year in June our Harry was born. I couldn’t believe how much I would love being his mum. So after teaching for the past 9 years I made the emotional decision to take an extended break so I could spend as much time as possible with our little boy.  All this new found “freedom” had me feeling a bit itchy to try something new.

3

What is Bumble Box?

Bumble Box takes children’s artwork and turns them into beautiful bespoke coffee table books. This can include letters, pottery, short stories or any special keepsakes you wish to display.

6

What inspired the idea to start Bumble Box?

As a teacher I know the amount of artwork that was being sent home. I know how emotionally hard it is to throw it away. I also know how frustrating it is to take up so much storage space. Children take such pride in their artwork. They often associate memories, facts and feelings when going through their art. I had been playing with the idea for some time, I even tried to convince my husband (who has a digital agency) that this is what parents really needed and that he should do this. After I resigned I knew it was the perfect time to test the waters. The complete wonderment and awe on my 4 year old nieces face when she looked through her own book made me realize just how important the sense of belonging is, and something as simple as seeing your art proudly displayed can be in a little persons life. Not to mention the slick design that will compliment your homes decor.

7

How does it work?

The whole process is aimed to make it as simple and convenient as possible for the busy parent. The easy to use step by step online ordering process allows for the box to be delivered to your home or work place. The hard part will be picking which art to pop in the box. Once you have finished selecting and packing a courier will come and collect the box from either your home or work place.  After the artwork has been professionally photographed and creatively curated into the coffee table book, your art and book will be delivered back to you.

4

Typically how long does it take?

4 – 5 weeks
