WELL DONE WENDY, JULIE AND SARAH

I love Christmas time and all the traditions that surround it. This year, for the first time, we decorated gingerbread houses.

It was such a fun activity to do with my girls. We had a selection of delicious things to use on the house (I think they enjoyed nipping the decorations as much as they enjoyed sticking them on the house!).

For decorations we used:

  • pistachio nuts
  • cranberries
  • a selection of sprinkles; stars, silver balls, gold dust
  • marshmallows
  • hand made chocolate

Some other ideas are: smarties, candy canes, chocolate buttons, jelly tots.

These beautiful gingerbread houses are from Moemas. The intricate icing adds a touch of magic to the gingerbread house, and more importantly, the gingerbread tastes (and smells!) divine.

In collaboration with Moemas and Fleur Norton we are giving away THREE gingerbread houses to our Johannesburg readers. To enter, follow Moemas on Instagram and Facebook, and leave a comment here telling us your favourite ingredient to use to decorate a gingerbread house.

Competition closes: Friday 8 Dec, Ts & Cs apply.

BUMP, MAMA, WEAR

WE LOVE: MOMSY

28th November 2017

When we were pregnant there were so few options in South Africa for great maternity wear (I basically wore my Yummy Mummy dresses everyday). So when I saw this new brand: Nursing Momsy I immediately messaged all my pregnant/breasfeeding friends and alerted them to this must have dress.

This is a specially “designed dress for nursing moms making nursing easy and more accessible, leaving moms feeling confident and stylish.” We love that it looks beautiful over a growing bump and then works perfect for breastfeeding. And of course the colour options have us insisting everyone gets more than one!

ROAD TRIP ACTIVITIES

27th November 2017
IMG_0744

We went on our first road trip with Francie last weekend. We headed to a farm in Limpopo, which was about 5 hours away. I was so nervous about the long drive with Francie. She isn’t the best in the car. Since we have a “no screen” policy I created loads of fun road trip activities for our journey. Here they, in case you are prepping for the holidays too. I also ordered this activity tray which was perfect for activities and snacks in the car, I’d really recommend it.

1. Velcro Coloured Sticks

Francie spied these on my desk this week and I know that she is already curious! I bought these coloured ice cream sticks at my local stationary store and then stuck velcro on them. The coloured sticks are great because not only can she stick them together, but also sort them into colours and patterns.

2. Lacing!

A new, fun activity which Francie is loving at the moment. We have a hand me down version from our cousins but here are three options which look great:

Melissa & Doug Farm Lace & Trace

Alex Lacing One, Two, Tie My Shoe

Viga Wooden Transportation Lacing Blocks

3. Activity Books (I picked this selection from Exclusive Books)

4. Crazy Clay

I recently discovered Crazy Clay at our weekly Mom and Me and we both loved it! It’s a fantastic mix between Play Doh and Presstick. This was a huge hit and she played with it for ages. The great thing about it is that is that you can keep reinventing activities. First, she played with the clay on it’s own, then using paper to create artwork with the clay and in the end I even gave her little things to stick in the clay.

5. Magnetic Drawing Board

I got one from Baby City for only R60. Francie hadn’t had one of these before and she totally loved it, it was a hit.

6. Button Trees

Trust me, this is worth making! Francie absolutely loved making these trees and it kept her busy for so long that I didn’t end up using all the activities that I packed. She loved threading the buttons and then on the way home, she enjoyed taking them off too.

TWO OF OUR FAVOURITE BOOKS

24th November 2017
Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Do you know “Oi Frog!” and “Oi Dog” by Kes Gray and Jim Field? These are definitely two of our favourite books at the moment. Oi Frog is a “hilarious rhyming tale about a frog who discovers that all animals have their special place to sit.” Of course, the rhyming is super appealing and all the kids in our family love this book from 2 year old Jack to nearly 7 year old Honor. They’ve even learnt the rhymes themselves. I also like that it introduces us to some new words like “mules” “gophers” and “satsumas”.

Oi Dog is pretty similar only this time the frog takes charge and tells everyone their new place to sit. Again the rhyming, illustrations and repetition is such such fun.

These two are a fantastic addition to any Christmas list or Santa bag!

Another one of their books which we have tried is Quick Quack Quentin which is a bit advanced for little ones but our 6 year old loved it!

PS. I noticed when linking that they are on sale on Take a Lot at the moment.

BATH TIME WITH MY BABY

9th November 2017
Judith Belle Adventures - 6

Although bath time (like in any home that is filled with children) is very much part of our end-of-day routine. I love it. I love the chats that sum up our day, the singing accompanied by splashed and of course the quite moments of cuddles and breast feeding. It is often during these everyday moments that as a mother one is made even more aware of how quickly things change, a slippery baby turns to a sitting toddler and then into a water confident, splash making little girl. I asked photographer Judith Bell to come capture our bath time before it changes again. Here are some of the pics, which I love.

MEET THE MAMA: SARAH

7th November 2017
DSC_2454

Although we have been “online mama friends” with Sarah and her gorgeous little girl Aria for quite a while we loved meeting them in person the other day. Sarah is the mama behind Mascara and Mimosas and sweet babe Aria is just delicious.

Favourite product for toddlers and why?

Aria doesn’t use ton of products, we are very lucky that she hasn’t suffered from anything like eczema or severe nappy rash. Two products that I make sure that I always have for her though are:

Kiehl’s nurturing oil for mom and baby – this nourishes Aria’s skin like a bomb and a little really goes a long way.

Shampooheads Awesome Annie Detangler – Aria has very knotty hair and this detangler gets those really nasty tangles and knots out pretty easily and with minimal discomfort.

As for toys, it’s a tricky question as Aria’s preferences change as often as we change her nappy! But the toys that she loves the most are her doll, her wagon, books and crayons and paper for drawing.

How has your style changed since becoming a mom?

To be honest, it hasn’t changed that much, I have always been a jeans and t-shirt kinda gal as it’s what I find most comfortable.

Best gift you have received for Aria?

Wow, we received so many amazing gifts for Aria. Practically, her princess tent has been fab to keep all of her toys hidden away in and her chair and table set is really great for her to sit at to do a whole bunch of different activities. For her dedication, Aria received some really gorgeous jewellery that I have put away to give her one day when she’s older and will really treasure them for the sentimental gifts that they are.

Favourite book to read toAria?

She has a ton of books, lately we have been reading Frog and the Whale in a Princess Tale by Tina Scotford. It is both written and illustrated by South Africans which is such a treat.

Where is your favourite place to go hang with Aria?

Without a doubt, Kiddilicious. It’s a great restaurant in Bedfordview with the most wonderful kids playground as well as really good coffee. Can’t go wrong!

Favourite meal to give Aria?

Bangers and mash is definitely her favourite meal, but my favourite is anything that’s quick and easy, ha!

What is the biggest surprise to you about having a toddler?

How quickly they change – one day they don’t know much and the next day it seems like they’ve swallowed an encyclopaedia! It really is amazing to watch a little person grow and learn.

You have a successful mom blogger – Any advice on balancing motherhood and work?

Don’t beat yourself up, you won’t always get it right. Balancing motherhood, work, my marriage, friendships as well as taking time out for myself is really difficult and most of the time I neglect one aspect but I have learnt not to be too hard on myself, I’m only human. At the end of the day, if I can go to sleep knowing that I did my best, that’s enough for me.

What one thing do you want to teach Aria?

Kindness, I think that it’s such an important virtue to have.

GIVEAWAY: #WINWITHART

1st November 2017

If you don’t know that we love doing art with our babes then you definitely haven’t been following us for very long. Afternoons spent in our art room are some of our happiest, and our babes love getting creative (and dirty) with paint, pastels, and all sorts of craft materials.

So really, it is no surprise that we are huge fans of mama-run businesses that love kids and all things creative. Two of our favourite companies are: Firstly, Bumble Box – a coffee table art book of all your child’s art. That’s right, mama and former teacher Paula turns kids’ art into the most treasured book. Secondly, Minimi Artelier – whose PLAY2LEARN line includes garments designed to protect children’s clothes while doing arts and crafts, cooking, baking and more, at school and at home.

The other day, we invited Kiss Kiss Photography to our home, threw on our kids’ Minimi Artelier Play2Learn overalls, and let them paint to their hearts desire. Here is the result:
